Over 41,000 civilians have fled their homes in Sudan's Darfur region since last December due to clashes between army and armed groups, said the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Thursday.
Aid organizations have assessed and verified the needs of 41,304 people displaced due to conflict in North Darfur and parts of the Jebel Marra area," said OCHA in its weekly bulletin released Thursday.
Intermittent clashes take place around the strategic area of Jabel Marra with which some armed groups are fortified while the Sudanese army is trying to control the area.
In November last year the Sudanese army launched a major military campaign with the aim of ending the rebellion in the troubled Darfur region.
According to the United Nations, around 1.4 million people are living in IDP camps in Darfur and others abroad, noting that the figure rises and falls based on the indicators of violence in the region which has been witnessing a civil war since 2003.
The Sudanese government and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) on July 4, 2011 signed the Darfur Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) which addresses issues relating to power and wealth sharing, human rights, return of refugees and IDPs, compensation, permanent cease-fire and security arrangements.
However, some major Darfur armed movements, including the Darfur rebel Justice and Equality Movement, have rejected to sign the agreement. Endit
