Nikkei opens higher on Greece hopes

Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher early Thursday as market sentiment was lifted by optimism that Greece would reach an agreement with its eurozone creditors.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei index gained 80.45 points, or 0.44 percent, from Wednesday at 18,279.62. It rose as high as 18,291.32 at one point, its highest intraday level since July 2007.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange increased 6.50 points, or 0.44 percent, at 1, 489.17.

Major gainers included banking, precision instrument and rubber issues. Endi
