6 killed in suicide car bombing in Iraq

Xinhua, February 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least six security members were killed and 19 others wounded on Wednesday in a suicide car bomb attack in Iraq's northern central province of Salahudin, a provincial security source said.

A suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into a checkpoint manned by soldiers and Shiite militiamen at the entrance of a military base, just west of the city of Samarra, some 120 km north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Large parts of Salahudin province have been controlled by the Islamic State (IS) group since June 11, a day after bloody clashes broke out between Iraqi security forces and the IS group. The militant group earlier took control of the country's northern city of Mosul and later seized swathes of territories in Nineveh and other predominantly Sunni provinces.

Iraq has been witnessing some of the worst violence in years. Terrorism and violence killed at least 12,282 civilians and injured 23,126 others in 2014, making it the deadliest year since the sectarian violence in the 2006-2007 period, according to a recent UN report. Endit
