Afghan forces kill 94 militants in 3 days

Afghan security forces have killed nearly 100 militants including some commanders in Taliban bastion in Sangin district in southern Helmand province over the past three days.

A statement of the Helmand-based 215 Corps released here on Wednesday, said "The security forces during the ongoing cleanup operations dubbed 'Zofiqar' raided Taliban hideouts in Sangin district and have killed 94 insurgents over the past three days," the statement asserted.

Zolfiqar is the name of a special sword used by Muslim's fourth Caliph Hazrat Ali Bin Abi Talib in war against enemies 14 centuries ago.

Sangin district in Taliban former stronghold the southern Helmand province has been regarded as militants' outfit in southern region of the conflict-ridden country.

Another 66 militants have been injured and nine others made captive during the operations, the statement of the army said.

The Afghan government launched major operations in parts of Helmand province on Sunday morning to sweep out insurgents and extend government control across the restive province.

Taliban outfit has yet to make comment.
