UN publishes landmine action projects overview for 2015

Xinhua, February 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United Nations on Tuesday published the online overview of Mine Action Projects 2015, saying that, of the overall funding requirement of 296 million US dollars, only 20 percent has been secured to date.

Reflecting the way in which mine action has evolved over recent years, this year's portfolio includes projects such as Weapons and Ammunition Management, Data Collection and Surveillance, Capacity Development and Support to Socio-Economic Development.

According to the portfolio, the country with the largest needs remains with Afghanistan, with over 80 million US dollars needed for 2015, of which only 20 million has been secured.

The Portfolio is coordinated by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS).

Agnes Marcaillou, Director of UNMAS and Chair of the Inter-Agency Coordination Group on Mine Action, said that the Portfolio provides donors with a reliable tool for responding to the needs of affected communities, and it is "a powerful illustration of the United Nations support to affected countries and partnership with the donor community."
