Sierra Leone leader vows to punish misuse of Ebola funds

Xinhua, February 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Sierra Leone's President Ernest Bai Koroma on Monday called on the public to exercise patience after an Auditor General's report released last week showing Ebola funds were probably misused.

According to a statement issued by the state house, President Koroma encourages the general public to "exercise patience and allow the due process of the law to take its cause."

The government made it abundantly clear that "those found guilty of misusing the Ebola funds will face the full penalty of the law," it said.

The Auditor General's report highlighted a number of discrepancies in the disbursement of the funds to the tune of millions of dollars. In many cases money was disbursed to individuals and institutions without any financial documents including proper receipts.

There are cases of disbursement of the tune of 14 billion leones amounting to millions of dollars without any financial documents, no proper financial procedures were followed.

The statement pointed out that it has been emphasized by the President in his numerous social mobilization tours countrywide that the "government attaches paramount importance for the judicious use of the Ebola funds and will ensure proper accountability in the use of such funds." Endi
