Australian stocks close stronger

The Australian share market closed stronger on Monday after a volatile day of trading.

At the official market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was 11.2 points higher, or 0.19 percent, at 5,888.7, while the broader All Ordinaries index added 14 points, or 0.24 percent, to 5849.5.

Financials had a mixed day lifting 0.1 percent as a sector. ANZ lifted 0.36 percent, the Commonwealth Bank was 0.31 percent higher, the National Australia Bank inched up 0.05 percent while Westpac lifted 0.32 percent.

Materials gained 0.51 percent as a sector. BHP Billiton rose 1. 21 percent while Rio Tinto slipped 0.38 percent.

Energy stocks pushed up 0.91 percent. Beach Energy added 1.8 percent, Oil Search increased 0.6 percent, Santos gained 1.89 percent while Woodside Petroleum slipped 0.06 percent.

Healthcare stocks rallied 0.37 percent, with CSL gaining 0.96 percent.

Consumer staples lifted 0.46 percent as a sector. Woolworths rallied 0.65 percent while Wesfarmers added 0.18 percent.

Meanwhile, Qantas shed 1.12 percent and Telstra gave up 0.15 percent. Endi
