British PM sends condolences to victims of Copenhagen shootings

British Prime Minister David Cameron on Sunday sent condolences to victims of shooting attacks in Danish capital of Copenhagen, describing the shootings as an attack on "free speech" and "religious freedom."

Two shootings occurred in the Danish capital on Saturday, which killed two civilians and injured five policemen, said local police authority.

"The shootings in Copenhagen are an appalling attack on free speech and religious freedom. Two innocent people have been murdered simply for their beliefs and my thoughts are with their loved ones and all those injured at this tragic time," Cameron said in a statement Sunday.

"Denmark and Britain are both successful multi-ethnic, multi-faith democracies and we must never allow those values to be damaged by acts of violence like this," the prime minister added.

He vowed to offer "full support" for the Danish government and Danish people as they deal with the "terrible incidents."

The first of the two attacks occurred Saturday afternoon during a seminar at a cultural center Krudttoenden, where a man was killed and three police officers were injured.

The second shooting took place late Saturday night near Copenhagen's Norreport Station, where a young Jew was shot dead in the head and two police officers shot in the arm and leg.

Danish authorities said the police have identified the alleged perpetrator, who was killed by police early Sunday morning in the Noerrebro neighborhood in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen police said patrols will be strengthened in the Danish capital in the coming days to ensure security. Enditem
