The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a national meeting Sunday at the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium to mark the 73rd birth anniversary of late leader Kim Jong Il, due on Feb. 16.

In a report to the meeting, Choe Ryong Hae, a secretary of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, urged the party, the army and the people to "win victories in the general guidance of defending socialism and building a thriving nation."

Director of General Political Bureau of the Korean People's Army Hwang Pyong So also attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, a figure skating festival kicked off at an ice rink in Pyongyang to mark the occasion.

The anniversary, which is called "Shining Star Festival," is a national holiday in the DPRK and people in the country usually have three days off on Feb. 16-18.

On Friday, the 19th Kimjongilia flower exhibition opened at the Kimilsungia-Kimjongilia Exhibition Hall in Pyongyang, which is also a part of the annual events to mark Kim Jong Il's birthday since 1996. Endi
