Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) came from behind to defeat visiting Madagascar's ASSM Elgeso Plus 3-2 in the first leg of the preliminary round of the CAF Confederations Cup on Friday.
Although the home side were trailing 1-0 after 47 minutes with one man short, they fought back strongly with Robert Ssentongo picking a brace and substitute Frank Kalanda netting the winner.
First half substitute Yvon Njilamanana converted a 47th penalty to give the visiting team the lead. URA FC defender Jonathan Mugabi had brought down Bosco Jean in the box and was sent off.
The home team had several missed chances in the first half with Robert Ssentongo, Said Kyeyune and skipper Simeon Masaba all coming close.
On return the ASSM Elgeso Plus team pushed forward in search of a goal before Jean ran with the ball to score and was brought down in the box. Njilamanana made no mistake sending URA FC goalkeeper Brian Bwete the opposite side.
Coach Alex Isabirye made three changes that brought more life in the URA FC attack before Robert Ssentongo scored to make it 1-1. James Kasibante curved in a neat ball and Ssentongo scored.
But the visiting side soon benefited from another penalty after a URA FC defender pulled down Deanny Rajoarimanana in the box. The same player stepped up and converted to give the ASSM Elgeso Plus side a 2-1 lead.
Ssentongo rescued the hosts again on 76 minutes when he finished off a well-taken Masaba curving cross. Five minutes later Kalanda finished off a rebound to give the home side a 3-2 lead.
The former Uganda Cranes striker Kalanda was however booked for taking off his jersey as he celebrated the third goal.
"I am not happy that we gave away two penalties in a home game. We need to go back to the drawing board ahead of the return leg in Madagascar in two weeks," said URA FC coach Isabirye. Endi
