Myanmar gov't warns students to stop protest march

Xinhua, February 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar's government on Friday warned protesting students against marching to Yangon to demand changes of the country's education law.

Noting that protesting students are requested to suspend their march during the talks, the government warned that actions will be taken in accordance with law to prevent undesirable problems if the students do not stop their protest march and enter Yangon region, according to a government press release.

The warning follows quartet talks involving the government, the parliament, Myanmar National Network for Education Reform (NNER) and Leading Committee for Students March Protest that have on Wednesday agreed in principle to protesting students' all 11 points of demand on the amendment of the education law, said the release.

The government is also trying to comply with other demands of the students and the next meeting is scheduled to take place on Saturday to discuss the implementation of the agreement, it added.

Hundreds of students have been staging a protest march from Mandalay, the second largest city in the country to former capital Yangon over the past weeks. Endi
