Int'l coalition strikes kill 20 IS fighters in Syria

Xinhua, February 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 20 fighters of the Islamic State (IS) militant group were killed in strikes mounted by an international anti-terror coalition in a northern Syrian city, a monitoring group reported Friday.

The coalition airstrikes targeted the IS positions in the predominantly-Kurdish city of al-Hasakeh, more specifically in its southern countryside, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists on ground.

One civilian was also killed in these airstrikes, said the Observatory, adding that clashes erupted also between the Kurdish militants of the People's Protection Units (YPG) and the IS at the outskirts of the Tal Tamr town in Hasakeh.

The Syrian government forces also pounded the IS positions in the southern countryside of Hasakeh, without information on losses, according to the Observatory.

The U.S.-led coalition has been hammering the IS positions in northern Syria since last September, as part of the international community's effort to put an end to the militant group. Endit
