Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has said the country will install new intelligent electric meters to combat energy theft, Albanian Daily News reported Thursday.
Rama revealed the first details of the project he launched a few weeks ago about the provision of new intelligent energy meters for consumers. According to him, a German telecommunications company, Deutsche Telecom, will invest in the project.
The prime minister said that this investment will bring about final liberation for Albania, which has been facing the energy theft problem for decades.
"Our objective is that in this vision of transformation in the next five years, we will give every Albanian the opportunity to have a very accurate service and not pay even a cent more, which means the extraordinary growth of efficiency in the utilization of this source, great reduction of losses, and a second liberation of Albania," Rama said.
In January, Albanian Energy Distribution Network Operator (OSHEE) said it would invest over 50 million U.S. dollars this year to improve its distribution network.
The OSHEE said that it has managed to reduce the pace of money losing trend in the energy sector in cooperation with the state police and under the support of the government. Endi
