Ghanaian president salutes Black Stars despite loss

Xinhua, February 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

The president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has congratulated the Black Stars for a "gallant performance" despite losing the finals of the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) to the Elephants of Cote d'Ivoire.

The Black Stars lost 8-9 in a dramatic penalty shootout Sunday night in the Equatorial Guinea city of Bata.

President Mahama wrote on his twitter account: "Kudos Black Stars. Gallant performance despite our loss. You exceeded our expectations, going from zero to heroes. I am proud of you."

Despite their loss, Christian Atsu, Andre Ayew, Afriyie Acquah and Kwesi Appiah bowed out with some individual awards.

Atsu was named the tournament's most valuable player as well as the best goal of the competition following his great strike against Guinea during the group stages.

Ayew bowed out with the highest scoring prize after scoring three goals in the tournament.

Acquah was named the best player of the final while Appiah bagged the fair-player prize. Enditem
