The Hungarian Olympic Committee( HOC)resolved on Friday to call on Budapest and Hungary to explore possibilities for organizing the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.
Noting that the idea requires powerful social and professional support, the HOC called for a revamping of past feasibility studies that take full advantage of latest and more lenient International Olympic Committee rules. Under new IOC rules several cities can get together to share events or in exceptional cases, cross-border Games are also to be allowed.
Applications for the 2024 Games need to be submitted by September 15 of this year and the decision will be made in the summer of 2017. As of the moment Boston, Rome, Paris, and Durban have announced to bid for the 2024 Olympics. Still expected is an application from a German city, either Hamburg or Berlin.
Gusztav Bienerth, a member of the Olympic Patrons' Corps, said Hungary had prepared feasibility studies several times before including 2002 and 2010. Since then, he said, Hungary has built a number of facilities that should reduce construction costs.
At the same time, he noted that the new rules, which are good for Hungary, are also good for all of its competitors. So to have a chance Hungary needs extensive support from its Central European neighbors. Endite
