Arms deliveries "fire accelerant" in Ukraine crisis: German minister

Xinhua, February 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

German Defence Minster Ursula von der Leyen said Friday that weapons deliveries could be a fire accelerant to the crisis in Ukraine.

The minister made the remarks at the the 51st Munich Security Conference, which opened here on Friday and attracted more than 400 decision-makers in international politics for discussions on global security issues.

"I believe that a concentration on weapons deliveries alone could be a fire accelerant, and bring us further away from a desired solution," she said.

Von der Leyen believed too many weapons had already been used in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. She called on parties involved in the Ukraine crisis to take responsibility.

"It must be possible to find a balance of interests in Ukraine, which guarantees both national integrity and an appropriate degree of autonomy, and that should not be a result of military conflicts, but at negotiating table," she said. Endie
