Xinhua, February 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Emergency staff have started to dispose of dead animals in the flooded areas in central Albania where thousands of livestock drowned due to flash floods, local media reported on Thursday.

In Vlora and Fier, over 3,500 livestock drowned during the flash floods, and the authorities are using the window of weather condition improvement to bury the dead animals, according to Albanian Daily News.

Specialists pointed out that dead animals constitutes a major threat for the health of residents, since it increases the risk of different epidemics.

Albanian National Food Authority has taken measures to prevent abuses with the meat of animal carcasses. The regional authorities of Fier and Vlora have drafted a plan for preventing the abuses with these animals.

"In order to prevent any possible case of abuse, the Food Authority inspectors in Fier and Vlora have joined the police at road blocks and other working groups, with the purpose of preventing any abuse. The authorities have inspected small and big meat businesses," said the heads of the Fier Food Authority, Frederik Cuko, and Renato Bushaj of Vlora.

They said that no cases of abuse have been identified so far, while the inspections will continue until no more carcasses are found on the surface.

Meanwhile, the 600 families that have been evacuated from flooded areas were not allowed to return to their homes since the danger has not passed.

More rainfalls are expected in the coming days. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, while visiting affected areas in Vlora and Fier, warned of new floods due to a possible increase of rainfall on Friday and during the weekend. Enditem
