Eurozone retail trade up 0.3 pct in December

Xinhua, February 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

The seasonally adjusted retail trade volume rose by 0.3 percent in both the eurozone and the European Union (EU) in December 2014, EU's statistical office, Eurostat, said Wednesday.

On a year-on-year basis, retail sales increased by 2.8 percent in the eurozone and 3.2 percent in the EU.

Eurostat attributed the increases in December to sales in automotive fuel, the non-food sector and food, drinks and tobacco.

Among member states for which data are available, the highest increases were registered in Ireland, Austria, Spain and Slovakia, while the largest decreases in Portugal, Estonia, Denmark and Slovenia.

The average retail trade for the year 2014, compared with that of 2013, rose by 1.3 percent in the eurozone and 1.9 percent in the EU. Endi
