Xinhua, February 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

The 1st World Conference on Tourism and Culture kicked off here on Wednesday to discuss the challenges and lasting development opportunities for cultural tourism.

Cambodian Tourism Minister Thong Khon said the three-day event, organized by Cambodia in cooperation with the United Nations World Tourism Organization and the UNESCO, brought together, for the first time, ministers and representatives of tourism and culture from 99 countries.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Hun Sen said the conference was a proper opportunity to discuss and exchange experiences among experts and researchers in order to pan out new measures for continued development of tourism and culture.

"I believe that this conference will help promote more active cooperation in building a new partnership between tourism and culture so as to push for the sustainable development of cultural tourism," he said.

According to the prime minister, Cambodia attracted 4.5 million international tourists last year, generating total revenue of more than 3 billion U.S. dollars.

He said the country will receive around 5 million foreign visitors this year and up to 7.5 million in 2020. Endi
