New car sales start year with record month in New Zealand

Xinhua, February 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

New Zealand could be on the road to a second straight year of new car sales, according to figures from the Motor Industry Association (MIA) Tuesday.

New car sales last month at 11,667 were the strongest January month sales on record, MIA chief executive officer David Crawford said in a statement.

January sales, comprising 9,010 passenger vehicles and 2,657 commercial vehicles, were up 11 percent year on year.

Passenger vehicle sales were up 8.6 percent year on year and commercial vehicle sales were up 19 percent.

Toyota was the overall market leader last month with 21 percent market share, followed by Holden with 13 percent and Ford third with 9 percent.

"New vehicle sales for 2015 have started where they left off in 2014, with the outlook for 2015 remaining very positive," said Crawford.

A record 127,179 new cars were sold in New Zealand last year, up 12 percent from 2013.

The MIA attributed last year's sales to a strong economy and the relative strength of the country's currency. Endi
