4 killed by flu in Czech Republic

Four patients have died of influenza in the Czech Republic, while another 27 people have been seriously infected by the flu, the National Referential Laboratory said in a statement on the website of the National Health Institute Monday.

The number of flu patients increased by 94.9 percent and patients with acute respiratory disease increased by 23 percent in the fifth week of 2015, according to the laboratory, adding the epidemic "develops toward the generalized occurrence."

Some hospitals in areas hit hard by the epidemic have banned visits to flu patients for fear of infection.

The epidemic in the Czech Republic is caused by the H3N2 influenza virus.

Across-the-board influenza epidemic has hit all regions of the Czech Republic, including Prague, Czech chief sanitary officer Vladimir Valenta on Monday told television channel CT 24.

Valenta said the number of people infected with flu would further increase within two weeks.

According to him, an influenza epidemic has just begun to affect the Czech Republic.

He advised people who suffer from cardiac, vascular or respiratory tract diseases to be vaccinated against influenza.

Valenta told people to avoid public gathering, especially in confined areas, and to pay increasing attention to personal hygiene. He also called on people who have flu symptoms or has other acute respiratory illness to stay at home. Endit
