Portugal's Pet Festival kicks off

The 4th edition of Portugal's Pet Festival kicked off on Friday at Lisbon's Feira Internacional de Lisboa (FIL).

Over 2,500 animals were on display, including exotic animals like pythons, meerkats and hermit crabs.

Many pet fans take their dogs along with them to the fair, where they can participate in workshops and buy food and other products and services for their pets.

"I have come here with my dog Brutos," said Cristina Maldonado, 55, a decorator. "I love dogs and I know that here I can find all possible breeds. Brutos likes coming too."

Several associations were present at the fair, including the Assocation of dogs from Serra de Estrela, a mountanous region around 270 km north of Lisbon.

"They are a hearding breed and are very loyal to their owners," said Adriano Maruqes, holding a large, athletic serra de estrela dog.

There are larger animals for people to stroke too, like alpacas, a camel-like animal, and at the far end there is a ring for horse riders.

Children also enjoy the fair, with this year's theme being "children's relationship with pets."

The fair will be open until Feb. 1 and tickets are 5 euros per person. Endit
