France's Le Pen set to win first round of 2017 presidential election: poll

Xinhua, January 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen is expected to win the first round of the next presidential election, an opinion poll showed on Friday.

Based on French people's current voting intentions, a survey by pollster CSA for RTL radio showed Le Pen would collect 29 to 33 percent of the vote in the first round of the 2017 presidential election, outpacing incumbent President Hollande who was expected to garner only 19 percent of votes, despite a fresh boost in his approval ratings after Islamist attacks in Paris earlier this month.

The conservative former president Nicolas Sarkozy, his ex-Prime Minister Alain Juppe, and Hollande's Prime Minister Manuel Valls would collect more votes than Hollande, with 22.5 percent in the first round, the survey added.

However, Le Pen's anti-immigrant Front National party would not win the second round of the presidential run-off even facing Hollande, France's most unpopular president.

An unprecedented gain in the last European parliament election coupled with the Islamic attacks raised questions over the far-rightists' chance to book their ticket for the Elysee Palace in 2017, amid persistent economic crises and social strains that fuelled public discontent. Enditem
