Special equipment kills 282 in 2014

Xinhua, January 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Accidents involving special equipment such as elevators and boilers claimed 282 lives and injured 330 people in China in 2014, official data showed on Friday.

The number of deaths was down 2.42 percent from a year earlier, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).

There were a total of 283 accidents, 56 more than 2013, according to the AQSIQ.

The accidents involved elevators, boilers, pressure pipelines, cranes, motor vehicles in factories or construction sites, and large-scale recreation facilities.

Chen Jing, a spokeswoman for the AQSIQ, attributed the increasing accidents to a lack of safety awareness, improper use of equipment and slack security management at work sites.

The AQSIQ has asked local authorities to strengthen checks on special equipment to ensure work safety. Endi
