Tokyo stocks close 0.39 pct higher on strong corporate earnings

Tokyo stocks closed 0.39 percent higher Friday as market sentiment was lifted by strong corporate earnings, but gains were limited due to the yen's firmer.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 68.17 points, from Thursday at 17,674.39.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 1.49 points, or 0.11 percent, to 1,415. 07.

Major gainers included fisheries and metal products, as well as pulp and paper issues.

The turnover was 2,754.5 billion yen (about 23.34 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
