Foreign direct investment grows 2.9 pct in Latvia in 2014

Latvian businesses received 7.259 billion euros in foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2014, which was an increase by 2.9 percent from a year before, according to information from Lursoft business database provider on Thursday.

The largest investments were made in companies based in the Latvian capital city of Riga, the central Latvian town of Jelgava and the south-western port city of Liepaja.

Companies registered in Riga have received the highest number of FDI, or 4,824, while 172 investments were made in businesses in Latvia's seaside resort town of Jurmala and 108 in Marupe, a municipality just outside Riga.

FDI grew by 119.31 million euros in Riga, 28.487 million euros in Jelgava and 21.03 million euros in Liepaja in 2014.

The largest FDI made in Riga last year was 104.536 million euros invested by S.P.I. Regional Business Unit in the share capital of newly-registered Amber Beverage Group. Also, Estonian builder Merko Ehitus invested 62.177 million euros in its subsidiary, Merko Investments.

At the end of 2013, the total value of Latvia's accumulated FDI was 7.053 billion euros. Enditem
