1st LD: Dozens missing in Bangladesh ship sinking

Xinhua, January 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Dozens of Bangladeshis went missing as a trawler carrying more than 100 overseas job-seekers capsized in the Bay of Bengal Thursday, local media reported.

The coast guards rescued 31 people, but others were still unaccounted for.

It sank near the Bangladeshi island of Kutubdia, according to the reports.

The over-loaded ship had been attempting to sail to Malaysia, a destination for thousands of impoverished Bangladeshis and ethnic Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

Boats and ferries are still commonly used as key means of transportation in Bangladesh. However, the vessels are often over- loaded or badly maintained. Endi
