The Australian share market closed a fraction higher on Wednesday following the release of the nation 's official inflation rate.

At the official market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index gained 5.6 points, or 0.1 percent, to 5,552.8 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 5.1 points, or 0.09 percent, at 5,516.6.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher on Wednesday. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 9.18 points, or 0. 47 percent, to 1,961.58 at the close. Trading volume stood at 395. 68 million shares worth 5.19 trillion won (4.79 billion U.S. dollars).

The South Korean currency finished at 1,084.5 won against the greenback, down 4.7 won from Tuesday's close.

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's share prices closed down 0.11 percent Wednesday with the weighted index down 10.67 points at 9,510.92, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 81.78 billion new Taiwan dollars (2.62 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks rose 0.15 percent on Wednesday, rebounding from early losses on optimism over the performance of Japanese firms.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 27.43 points, from Tuesday at 17,795.73, the highest close since Dec. 26.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Wednesday with composite index unchanged at 1,405.68.

A total of 48,090 shares worth about 34 million Lao kip (about 42,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.40 percent higher on Wednesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 30. 61 points to 7661.18. The all-share index went up by 14.12 points, or 0.32 percent, to 4454.78.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks moved up 54.53 points, or 0.22 percent, to close on Wednesday at 24,861.81 points.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,716.68 and 24, 983.89. Turnover totaled 80.37 billion HK dollars (about 10.37 billion U.S. dollars).

SHANGHAI -- China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange closed at 3,305.74 points Wednesday, down 1.41 percent.

Total turnover was 341.6 billion yuan (55.6 billion U.S. dollars).

SHENZHEN -- The Shenzhen Component Index on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange closed at 11,354.2 points Wednesday, down 1.71 percent.

Total turnover was 264.9 billion yuan (43.14 billion U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 583.76 points on Wednesday, up 4.46 points, or 0.77 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 113.561 million shares worth 1.931 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (90 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 107 stocks went up, 101 stocks fell down, while 68 stocks remained unchanged.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, the HNX- Index, closed at 87.23 points on Wednesday, up 1.14 points, or 1. 32 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of 62.738 million shares worth 739.559 billion Vietnamese dong (35.05 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday, a decrease of 25.01 percent in volume and 32.4 percent in value against the previous trading session.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 6.95 points, or 0. 20 percent, to close at 3,419.15.

A total of 1.38 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 23 billion Singapore dollars (924.8 million U.S. dollars).

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSEX (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Wednesday 4,747.64 points, down 9.46 points or about 0.20 percent from Tuesday.

Among a total of 305 issues traded, 99 registered gains and 169 incurred losses while 38 remained unchanged.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower by 8.30 points, or 0. 16 percent, to a level of 5,268.85 on Wednesday.

Some 192,432 transactions were booked, involving 5.83 billion shares worth 5.59 trillion rupiah (about 447.19 million U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Wednesday moved up 3.00 points, or 0.19 percent to close at 1,592.81 points.
