Nikkei ends 0.15 pct higher on optimism over Japanese firms

Tokyo stocks rose 0.15 percent on Wednesday, rebounding from early losses on optimism over the performance of Japanese firms.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 27.43 points, from Tuesday at 17,795.73, the highest close since Dec. 26.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 3.54 points, or 0.25 percent, higher at 1,429.92.

Major gainers included airline, shipping and pulp and paper issues.

The turnover was 2,302.3 billion yen (about 19.49 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
