Lisbon's city council Wednesday discussed plans to build transport systems to make access to three hillside neighborhoods of the Portuguese capital, local media reported.
A funicular railway, escalators and a lift will be built to link the city with Graca, Mouraria and Se easier, respectively, Portuguese news agency Lusa reported.
The transport systems are included in the Plan for Easy and Assisted Access to the Castle Hill, which was initially drawn up in 2009. The three neighborhoods are located on the same hill.
According to the 2009 plan, the funicular railway is expected to cost about 1.73 million euros (1.95 million U.S. dollars).
A set of three escalators is planned to scale the Mouraria neighborhood along with provisional wooden steps next to a section of the old city wall and re-opening an old set of steps up to Sao Jorge Castle itself, at a total cost of 789,200 euros, Lusa said.
The lift that is included in the plans will link Campo das Cebolas near the Tagus River to the Se, the Lisbon city cathedral, above it. This new lift is estimated to cost 617,500 euros.
According to Miguel Coelho, the president of the Lisbon parish of Santa Maria Maior, the tenders for the projects are due to be launched this year. ( 1 euro = 1.13 U.S. dollars) Endit
