Death toll in Greek F-16 jet crash in Spain rises to 11

Death toll has risen from 10 to 11 after a French soldier wounded in the Greek F-16 jet accident died on Tuesday at the La Paz Hospital, located in the capital of Spain, Madrid.

The accident took place on Monday afternoon at the airbase of Los Llanos, in Spain's central province of Albacete.

A Greek F-16 jet crashed during take-off killing 10 people and wounded another 21. The plane lost power and crashed into the parking for planes damaging at least five aircraft, whose tanks were filled with fuel and ready to take off.

The Minister of Defense Pedro Morenes reported on Tuesday that four French soldiers and an Italian soldier were still seriously injured, being treated at the La Paz Hospital and 12 de Octubre Hospital in Madrid.

The rest of the injured people, who are at the hospital in Hellin and Albacete, are better and some of them have left the hospital.

Morenes said there is an investigation carried out by NATO in order to know the causes of the accident. Spain will collaborate with this investigation and with all countries involved.

The Head of the Greek Air Force, Evangelos Turnas, and the French Minister of Defense, Jean Yves Le Drian will arrive in Spain on Tuesday, reports said.

The Greek jet was taking part in a NATO training exercise called Tactical Leadership Program (TLP) launched in 1978. The United States, Spain, France, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium take part in this program.

The crash was the first accident at the Spanish airbase of Los Llanos since it started to host the training program in 2009. Enditem
