1st LD: Rightwing Greek party to give confidence vote to left-wing SYRIZA party

Xinhua, January 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Greece's anti-bailout right-wing Independent Greeks (ANEL) party leader Panos Kammenos announced on Monday that the ANEL would give a vote of confidence to the radical left SYRIZA party which won Sunday's national elections.

The SYRIZA party celebrated a "historic victory" as partial results of Sunday's general elections showed that the party was in the lead with a comfortable margin.

"As of now, Greece has a government," Kammenos told reporters after a meeting with SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on the formation of a new government.

Meanwhile, Tsipras promised that he would scrap the country's strict austerity program.

Tsipras would formally visit President Karolos Papoulias Monday to receive the mandate on the formation of a new government.

According to Kammenos, Tsipras was expected to be sworn in as prime minister by Tuesday and announce the composition of a new government by Wednesday.

Before meeting with Tsipras, the Greek head of state would receive Parliament Speaker Evangelos Meimarakis, who would formally inform him on the final results of the elections. Endi
