Namibia, Botswana engage Norway on beef quotas

Xinhua, January 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Namibian Minister of Trade and Industry Calle Schlettwein is leading a delegation to Norway where he is expected to discuss a review of beef quotas.

Schlettwein, who left the country Saturday, will be joined by Botswana's trade minister Vincent Seretse for a discussion on reforms underway in Norway's agricultural sector.

The two ministers are expected to meet Norwegian trade minister Monica Mland.

The consultations are meant to protect the Southern African Customs Union market as Namibia and Botswana are members of the SACU.

Currently, Norway has a 500-tonne beef quota for Namibia and Botswana.

The Namibian quota, however, has to be shared among three producers -- public producer Meatco and two privately-owned producers Witvlei and Brukkaros Meat Processors.

Witvlei supplies 300 tonnes, Brukkaros 100 tonnes and Meatco 1, 200 tonnes. Endi
