Zambia's governing Patriotic Front (PF) candidate Edgar Lungu is headed for a victory in Tuesday's tightly contested presidential election, according to results from 146 constituencies announced so far by the country's electoral body.

The governing party's candidate has polled 789,848 or 47.96 percent of votes announced from 146 constituencies out of 150 constituencies announced. His closest rival Hakainde Hichilema of the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has polled 776,832 votes or 47.17 percent, according to official results from the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

The winner is expected to be declared later in the day and the remaining four constituencies are in eastern Zambia, the ruling party's stronghold.

The four constituencies have about 91,000 registered voters, according to the ECZ. Endi
