2 dead, thousands evacuated as floods hit S. Philippines

Xinhua, January 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Heavy floods have left at least two people dead and thousands of families evacuated in southern Philippine province of North Cotabato due to adverse weather conditions, authorities said Friday.

North Cotabato governor Lala Talio-Mendoza said due to continued heavy downpour the main river in Kabacan town overflowed causing flash floods in five towns in the province.

She said majority of flooded areas were low lying areas, including rice fields.

Officials have suspended the classes at the University of Southern Mindanao after floodwaters reached the main campus.

Thousands have evacuated in Arakan, according to Mendoza while 300 families were staying at the town's gymnasium.

Flash floods also hit low lying villages in the towns of Pikit, Matalam and President Roxas. Endi
