Tokyo shares ended Thursday mixed as investors awaited the European Central Bank's decision on a possible monetary easing.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 48.54 points, or 0. 28 percent, from Wednesday at 17,329.02.
The turnover was about 2,050.7 billion yen (about 17.36 billion U.S. dollars).

BEIJING -- Chinese shares closed higher on Thursday, extending rallies that began on Tuesday following a 7.7-percent drop on Monday, the steepest daily fall since June 2008.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ended at 3,343.34 points, up 0.59 percent. The Shenzhen Component Index closed at 11,471.21 points, up 0.87 percent.
Combined turnover of the two bourses fell to 714.17 billion yuan (116.6 billion U.S. dollars) from 808.58 billion yuan the previous trading day.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks moved up 170.05 points, or 0.70 percent, to close on Thursday at 24,522.63 points.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,438.98 and 24, 589.62. Turnover totaled 99.46 billion HK dollars (about 12.83 billion U.S. dollars).

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended slightly lower on Thursday.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) inched down 0.41 points, or 0.02 percent, to 1,920.82 at the close. Trading volume stood at 339.57 million shares worth 4.48 trillion won (4.13 billion U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed up 0.53 percent Thursday with the weighted index up 49.80 points at 9,369.51, according to news reaching here from Taipei.
Turnover totaled 97.83 billion new Taiwan dollars (3.11 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

SYDNEY -- Investors swooped on a depleted commodities stocks to boost the Australian share market for a second day at the close on Thursday.
At the official market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 26.5 points, or 0.49 percent, at 5,419.9 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index rose 23.1 points, or 0.43 percent, to 5,390.5 points.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 574.54 points on Thursday, up 5.42 points, or 0.95 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.
About 83.828 million shares worth 1.425 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (67.09 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 120 stocks went up, 94 stocks fell down, while 68 stocks remained unchanged.
VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 610.31 points, up 3.78 points, or 0.62 percent.
