PLO forms panel to mull over ICC cases against Israel

Xinhua, January 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on Wednesday formed a committee to consider urgent cases which will be filed against Israel before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The cases to be filed concern the settlements and last year's Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, said the Palestinian National Authority's executive committee in a statement following a meeting chaired by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

In the statement, the PLO called for seriously reconsidering the security cooperation with Israel in light of the Jewish state's suspension of the transfer of tax revenues to the PNA, which "constitutes collective punishment against the Palestinians."

Earlier, Israel decided to freeze paying the tax revenue dues to the PNA in response to President Abbas' move to join 20 international agencies and treaties, including the ICC.

Abbas signed up to join the ICC and other agencies and treaties after the UN Security Council failed to approve a draft resolution backed by the Arabs, which demanded an end to the Israeli occupation by 2017.

According to Oslo agreement signed between the Palestinians and Israel in 1993, Israel collects taxes on goods imported to the Palestinian territories and pays the revenues back to the PNA. Endit
