At least five people were killed while 10 others sustained serious injuries in a grisly road accident on Tuesday in Isiolo county, northern Kenya.
Isiolo divisional police commander Daniel Kamanza said the accident occurred at Gambella bridge when a truck heading to Isiolo town hit a herd of camels.
"Four women and three students who were reporting back to school are among the injured," Kamanza said, adding the truck was over speeding when it hit two camels, killing the five on the spot, about 15km east of Isiolo town.
"It was a fatal accident because three people are still in coma. We have also launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident. But initial reports say the truck was over speeding," the local police commander said.
He said the victims who are recuperating at the local hospital will be airlifted later to Nairobi for specialized treatment.
Locals said 80 goats and sheep on board the truck died on the spot and seven camels, which were crossing the road, also died.
Despite the latest accident, government officials said the accidents have been on the decrease in Kenya since January 2014 due to the introduction of stringent traffic rules.
According to the Kenya police, more than three quarters of those killed through road accidents are males and about half are children. Endi
