UN underscores comprehensive approach in helping countries emerge from conflict

The UN Security Council said Monday that supporting a country to emerge sustainably from conflict needs a comprehensive and integrated approach that can strengthen coherence between security and development.

In a presidential statement adopted here in a meeting on maintenance of international peace and security, the council highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of each conflict through a comprehensive approach, including promoting sustainable economic growth, poverty eradication and good governance.

The Security Council also underscored that national ownership and responsibility are essential to establishing sustainable peace in countries emerging from conflict.

"The Council reaffirms the primary responsibility of national authorities in identifying their priorities and strategies for post-conflict peace-building, with a view to ensuring national ownership," said the statement.

The Security Council encouraged member states to consider developing a UN common approach to inclusive development as a key for preventing conflict and enabling long-term stability and sustainable peace.

In this regard, the council noted "the importance of identifying and addressing social, economic, political, cultural and religious exclusion, intolerance, as well as violent extremism, which can be conducive to terrorism, as drivers of conflict," said the statement. Endite
