Israeli helicopter fires at targets in southern Syria

Xinhua, January 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Israeli helicopter on Sunday fired two missiles on a target in Syria's southern province of al-Qunaitera, the pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV reported.

The missiles targeted an unknown target in the al-Mazraa town in al-Qunaitera, which borders the Israel-occupied Golan Heights, according to the report.

The attack was coupled with the flight of two reconnaissance jets over the targeted area in the Syrian airspace, it added.

Other reports from pro-government news blogs said the strikes targeted "terrorists" in al-Mazraa town, adding that the town is actually under the rebels' control.

The Syrian state media has yet to comment on the incident.

The Israel Defense Forces has so far refused to comment on the report, as it usually do to such foreign reports.

If true, it would be the first Israeli attack against extremist groups in Syria. Previous Israeli attacks have targeted military positions only, under the pretext that such positions contain Hezbollah-bound weaponry. Endit
