Xinhua, January 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least one person died in an explosion at the Yuahnaya iron ore mine in Russia's Sverdlovsk region early Saturday, Tass reported.

"Five people were injured. Two of them were taken to hospital. The information about the dead miner is confirmed. Two others have not been found yet," spokesman of the local police Valery Gorelykh was cited as saying.

As many as 89 miners were working in the mine when the explosion occurred, and 86 of them have been evacuated, said the spokesman.

Severity of the two injured miners remain moderate, spokesman of the local healthcare ministry Konstantin Shestakov said.

A criminal case has been opened following the explosion, Alexander Shulga of the regional department of the Investigative Committee said.

"Experts of the Investigative Committee have left for the site," Shulga said.

Prosecutors of the Sverdlovsk region have organized an inspection of how safety requirements were observed at the Yuahnaya mine, local authority's press service said. Endi
