Thirteen suspects detained in Belgium anti-terror raid

Xinhua, January 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

The office of the Belgian state prosecutor confirmed on Friday that 13 suspects were detained in a police anti-terror operation conducted in the previous evening.

In the operation, police raided some premises in the capital city of Brussels and the eastern town of Verviers on Thursday in relation to the information that a "large-scale" terrorist attack was "imminent" in the country.

A dozen raids were carried-out in Verviers, Berchem, Liedekerke and several locations in Brussels.

The identities of detainees have not being revealed. The prosecutor's office has stressed that the detention has no connection with recent events in France.

In response to the situation, Belgium upgraded its terror-threat level, from two to three on a scale of four. Meanwhile, several Jewish schools in Brussels and Antwerp were closed on Friday.

There were also reports that a serious threat to the federal police headquarters was in existence. Endi
