Nikkei hits 2.5-month low in morning on Wall St. decline, stronger yen

Tokyo stocks dropped sharply in the morning session of Friday, with its benchmark Nikkei stocks index hitting a two-and-a-half months' low following a decline on Wall Street and a firmer yen.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 480.64 points, or 2.81 percent, from Thursday to 16,628.06.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange plunged 31.64 points, or 2.30 percent, to 1, 344.96.

Major decliners included airline, chemical and fishery issues. Endi
