Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta underwent ankle surgery and needs "approximately three months" to be back to action, the English Premier League club said Thursday.

Spanish midfielder Arteta removed a bony spur that was causing him discomfort from his left ankle, said Arsenal, adding that: "The procedure went well and Mikel will now begin a period of rehabilitation which is expected to last approximately three months."

Arteta has not played for the Gunners since damaging a calf in the 2-0 Champions League win at home to Borussia Dortmund on Nov. 26. Endi
