China's second straight victory in the ongoing AFC Asian Cup has thrown the soccer-mad country into frenzy.
China, who stunned three-time champions Saudi Arabia 1-0 in their Asian Cup opener on Sunday, came from one goal down to beat Uzbekistan 2-1 Wednesday and became the first team to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the Asian Cup in Australia.
Sina.com, the largest internet portal in China, acclaimed China's consecutive wins in group stage was the best start for China in Asian Cup in 27 years.
"Our players are all captains on the ground and they had a really fresh look," a Sina Weibo user said after the game.
China's win over Saudi Arabia came only after Chinese keeper Wang Dalei denied a penalty kick from Naif Hazazi, which he'd won himself after being fouled by Ren Hang inside the area.
"The victory over Uzbekistan proved our team have not only good luck, but capability as well," the People's Daily commented.
"Chinese players were tough-minded today and they impressed all the fans," added the paper.
Before the Asian Cup, Saudi Arabia remained unbeaten against China for 17 years and Uzbekistan twice sent China packing at the past two Asian Cups in 2007 and 2011.
"China has ensured a berth of the knockout stage with one more game to play, making fans feel proud since their 2002 World Cup appearance," the Beijing Daily said.
However, China's sterling performance also triggered a wave of jokes on the internet.
"The word 'Time is running out for Team China" was usually spoken of when China trailed behind in important matches before, and this time it was obviously suitable for Uzbekistan," a male fan surnamed Cao wrote on the Sina Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter.
"Well, I would like to watch the Chinese team reach the final of the Asian Cup and the 2018 World Cup finals," said another Sina Weibo user called Boiliing Water. "Let's enjoy the fireworks, although the Spring Festival is yet to come." Endi
