ECB has few options aside from quantitative easing: president

Xinhua, January 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Central Bank (ECB) does not have many options apart from quantitative easing, ECB president Mario Draghi told German newspapers on Wednesday.

Draghi did not disclose when and how the ECB is going to purchase sovereign bonds, but told weekly newspaper Die Zeit that all 25 members of the ECB governing council are determined to fulfill the mandate.

The mandate of the ECB has been defined as maintaining the inflation rate in the eurozone below but close to 2 percent. The inflation rate in the eurozone has been lingering at levels far below that target for about one year.

According to Draghi, there were differences of opinion as to how the ECB would conduct the sovereign bond purchasing. Speculations about an announcement of the government bond purchase at a governing council meeting scheduled on Jan. 22 are running high. Endit
