Uganda welcomes China's decision to support peace process in South Sudan

Xinhua, January 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda has welcomed China's decision to deploy peacekeeping troops in South Sudan and its support for the mediation efforts of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in a bid to end fighting in the country.

Asuman Kiyingi, Uganda's state minister for regional affairs told reporters here on Tuesday that China will play a very important role in bringing together the two warring parties of South Sudan, President Salva Kiir and his former vice president, Riek Machar, now opposition leader.

"We welcome China's intervention in South Sudan. China can play a very big role. It has been a friend to IGAD member states and other African countries," said Kiyingi.

"It's not a contrary process. It's complimentary. It will help bring the warring parties together to see how to solve the conflict," he said.

China late last year said that about 700 troops were ready to be deployed to South Sudan to bolster a UN force in the country.

The conflict that broke out in 2013 has left thousands of South Sudanese dead and forced around 1.9 million people to flee their homes. Endi
