Mozambique's Renamo boycotts inaugural meeting of parliament

Xinhua, January 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Mozambique's main opposition Renamo boycotted on Monday the inaugural meeting of a new parliament.

The ruling Frelimo party has 144 seats, Renamo 89 and the Movement for Democracy in Mozambique (MDM) 17 in the new parliament, which was elected at the general elections held on October 15.

At the meeting, which was chaired by outgoing President Armando Guebuza, 144 Frelimo MP's and the 17 from MDM were sworn into office.

Renamo is threatening to set up a parallel government if Frelimo does not accept its demand to form a "caretaker government"– which would essentially be a Frelimo-Renamo coalition.

MDM also is not recognizing the electoral results but decided not to appeal against ruling of the Constitutional Council, Mozambique's highest body in matters of constitutional and electoral law, which gave victory to the ruling Frelimo party and its presidential candidate Filipe Nyusi. Endi
