Gov't ordered to implement e-voting for overseas Indians

Xinhua, January 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

India's Supreme Court on Monday asked the central government to implement within eight weeks e- voting for all overseas Indians so that they can cast their ballot from abroad.

"E-ballot voting should be allowed at earliest," the Supreme Court said in an order, which would pave the way for more than 10 million Indians living abroad to cast their votes without having to fly back to their hometown during elections.

Earlier in the day, the Indian government told the court that it has already approved e-ballot voting for Indian passport holders abroad, as recommended by the Election Commission.

In e-voting, a blank postal ballot will be sent to a non- resident Indian by e-mail, who will have to download the paper, fill it and subsequently mail it back by post to the polling official concerned in his or her constituency. Endi
