Fijian PM congratulates Sri Lanka's new president

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has sent a congratulatory message to Sri Lanka's newly- elected President Maithripala Sirisena, the Fijian government said on Saturday.

"I have great pleasure to extend, on behalf of the government and people of the Republic of Fiji, my sincere congratulations to your excellency on your momentous presidential election victory and your appointment as the sixth president of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka," Bainimarama said in the message.

"I am confident that the trust placed in you by the people of Sri Lanka will be the foundation of inspiration for succeeding the best possible outcomes for the good of your country and its friendly people," he said.

The Fijian head of government said he looked forward to strengthening bilateral relations with Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Bainimarama extended an invitation to his Sri Lankan counterpart to visit Fiji in the near future, said the Department of Information.

Sirisena, who defeated incumbent president Mahinda Rajapaksa in Thursday's presidential election, was sworn in as Sri Lanka's new president on Friday. Endi
